Lamoreaux Landing Estate Red NV
Lamoreaux Landing is a Finger Lakes wine producer. Now, I’ve rarely heard anything overly positive about wines from the Finger Lakes. The general tenor of what I’ve read and heard has been that the New York wine industry, whether Finger Lakes or Long Island, is an industry still figuring out its way. Lots of questions remain about optimal varietals to match with the growing conditions, production methods to match the grapes that they produce, etc. And while some of the wines produced get good, even very good reviews, the majority are seen as somewhere between ok and up-and-coming.
That being said, I haven’t had a wine from the Finger Lakes before, and so I was looking forward to trying this one. Lamoreaux Landing grows their own grapes and produces all of their wine on-site. This wine in particular is their everyday red. It’s non-vintage, and a blend of several varietals – mostly cabernet franc, pinot noir, and merlot according to their website.
In the glass it’s a very pale red. The nose is bright but a bit thin. The palate has bright acidity and is quite tart – I taste cherries and some not-so-ripe strawberries. And the finish is okay, not a lot going on, but there is one.
I liked this wine enough. It costs ~$11, and I’d be ok drinking this as a sort of everyday wine. It might even be fun to try this cold in the summer. Maybe next year though, it’s getting cold outside tonight.
